The opening leg of the Black Lung Ultra begins with a scenic ascent of Coliseum Mountain, renowned for its stunning vistas. This leg proceeds in a counterclockwise direction, up the backside of Coliseum. Athletes will embark from the town, and proceed onto mixed trails, including a creek crossing, an Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) trail, and a variety of single track trails.
Black Lung Ultra-Marathon & Black Lung Marathon
Leg 2 honors the memory of the 29 miners lost in the 1941 Nordegg mine disaster. The route presents a balanced challenge for both individual racers and teams. Participants will commence in the town, head south for the ascent of Eagle Mountain, navigate a descent, and finish with a return via rail trail back to town.
The final leg of the race, "Collieries Closer," offers a lighter but engaging route. Participants will venture east of the town through a series of multi-use trails, turning south after a forestry truck road. A unique highlight is the trail that heads towards Nordegg’s historic Collieries, balancing elevation gains with the final descent into town.
In addition to the aid stations and checkpoints below, the starting line at the Nordegg community hall will serve as the main aid station, as well as transition point (start/finish) for each leg. Racers can expect to find the following supplies here:
